Marvel: Legendary is a fantastic game and to this date there has been 40(!) expansions released, and most of them are great. But if we have to narrow it down, to, say, a top 5 or top 10? This is our take on the best legendary expansions. Starting with the best one and work our way down.

Marvel Legendary: X-Men

Marvel Legendary: X-men

This is expansion came out 2017, and it was the 13th expansion to come out, and in the big box format we used to be blessed with, containing 394 cards!
Marvel Legendary: X-men obviously revolves around X-men heroes like Psylocke, Banshee and Phoenix (which have an insane ulti that annihiliates everything 😅).

Phoenix crazy cost 9 card.
Phoenix crazy cost 9 card which lets you Berserk time after time, but be careful, it might backfire...
The set contains a whooping 15 numbers of heroes in total, and they are all pretty cool, with perhaps a couple of exceptions.
The set also contains 6 Masterminds which are double sided (Normal and Epic variants), and among these are Dark Phoenix, and Onslaught, two insanely strong Masterminds, especially if you go up against the Epic versions.
As for keywords, this set has cards with the cool Berserk mechanic which allows you do discard the top card of your deck and get thay cards printed attack to your attack pool. The set contains also contain the unique keyword Piercing Energy which allows you to attack a villains Victory point value rather than their strength. Very interesting and cool!

Pros: Alot of cards, and many cool heroes, villains and masterminds. It also has a bunch of Heroic Bystanders and some other cool stuff we will let you explore on your own 😉.

Cons: It's been out of print for a very long time and it seems unlikely that is subject to change any time soon. Also, some keywords like Lightshow and X-Gene are so so.

Overall a super good expansion, especially if you like the X-Men, 10/10

Marvel Legendary: Dark City

Marvel Legendary: Dark City

The first big expansion to this fantastic card game. Marvel Legendary Dark City used to be considered essential by the fans of the game, but the status have somewhat changed as more expansions have been release.
Nevertheless, it's definately one of our favorite expansions, with great masterminds like Apocalypse and Kingpin, along with a whole bunch of classic heroes like Domino, Blade and Elektra. Not to mention one of the best heroes in the game; Iceman. There are 5 Masterminds and 17 Heroes in this set, which is only something you can dream of in any of the new sets...
This expansion obviously contains some schemes (8 of them) as well where our favorites are Capture Baby Hope and Detonate the Helicarrier. A couple of new bystanders are included as well.

One of Dominos cards that costs 1...
Domino has a one of the few cards up to date that costs 1, and its not bad, thanks to Versatile.
As for keywords, this set has only has a few new ones, but they are great and not overly complicasted or fiddly, like Versatile which lets you spend that number as strength or stars. Teleport let's you save a card for a later turn, leading to interesting decisions.

Pros: This expansion introduces new keywords and mechanics that were not present in the base game without making the game fiddly or overly complicated. A super good expansion for playing with new players.

Cons: It's been out of print back and forth so it might be difficult to get a hold of.

Overall a super good expansion, especially if playing with new players as the cards are very straight forward in most cases. It might very well be the best Marvel legendary expansion. 💪 10/10

This expansion is often out of print, but comes back every now and then

Marvel Legendary: What If?

Marvel Legendary: What If?

Eventhough Marvel Legendary: What If…? isn't technically an expansion, but rather a baseset, we will include it in this list. Mostly because it's awesome and secondly because why not? It's inspired by Marvel’s What If…? comic stories, this set explores alternate realities where familiar heroes and villains take on very different roles. Examples of masterminds include Zombie Scarlet Witch and Ultron Infinity.

The set introduces new Heroes, Masterminds, Villains, and Schemes, all built around alternate-timeline versions of iconic characters. Players get to recruit unusual variations of favorites like Peggy Carter as Captain Carter, T’Challa as Star-Lord, Apocalyptic Black Widow, and more. On the villain side, expect equally twisted foes drawn from the multiverse as mentioned earler.

This set mixes classic Legendary gameplay with unique mechanics that reflect the unpredictable nature of alternate realities. Scenarios may bend expectations, forcing players to adapt their strategies as the timeline branches in unexpected directions.

Like all Marvel: Legendary expansions, What If…? can be played as an add-on or mixed with other sets, or, as it is technically a standalone set, it can be played on it's own , making it a flexible addition for both newcomers and veteran players.

The set includes 350 cards in total, and will bring back keywords like Rise of the Living Dead and Empower as well as the multi-class mechanic from Secret Wars. Obviously, it will also introduce a couple of new ones, but we will let you discover those by yourselves.

T’Challa as Star-Lord with multi class and what if? keyword
What If..? means “Choose a Hero Class or Hero Name. Then reveal the top card of your deck, and either put it back on top of your deck or discard it. If the revealed card had the Hero Class or Hero Name you chose, then do the What If effect.” Note that this is also a multi class card.

All in all, a fantastic set/expansion 10/10

Oh yeah, by the way, per popular demand, we've hooked you up with the Marvel Legendary What If..? rulebook as pdf enjoy!
